Tow Truck Driver Shot By Armed Citizen During Road Rage Incident

A road rage incident in Crestwood led to a tow truck driver shot by another driver with a concealed carry license, which turned fatal. The incident began with a collision and escalated when both drivers pulled out firearms.

CRESTWOOD, IL (2-minute read) — In Crestwood, a road rage incident escalated to a fatal shooting earlier this week, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old tow truck driver. The incident began around 3:02 p.m. on Tuesday when Crestwood police were dispatched to the area of 132nd Street and Cicero Avenue following reports of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers found the tow truck driver shot, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. They administered first aid until paramedics from the Crestwood Fire Department transported the victim to Christ Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation revealed that the road rage incident began with a collision between the tow truck and a Buick Enclave near Cal Sag Road and Cicero Avenue. Both vehicles continued south on Cicero and eventually turned into the access road leading to Rivercrest Mall.

According to police, the confrontation intensified when both vehicles stopped. The tow truck driver allegedly brandished a firearm, prompting the driver of the Buick Enclave, who had a valid Concealed Carry License (CCL), to draw his own firearm and fire a single shot. This shot struck the tow truck driver, leading to his death.

The driver of the Buick Enclave is cooperating with the police investigation. Authorities are examining all aspects of the incident to determine the appropriate course of action.

This tragic event highlights the importance of situational awareness and de-escalation techniques, which can often prevent such confrontations from turning deadly. It is crucial for individuals with concealed carry permits to understand the gravity of using their firearms and to prioritize non-violent conflict resolution whenever possible.

Safety Tip: Always prioritize de-escalation during confrontations. If you carry a firearm, remember that it should only be used as a last resort to protect life. Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid engaging in aggressive driving behaviors.
