NEW HAVEN, CT — A confrontation involving a machete resulted in the fatal shooting of a man at the Bella Vista senior living complex on Friday evening. The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. when New Haven police responded to reports of a disturbance at the Eastern Street complex.
According to law enforcement, the deceased, 56-year-old John Reynolds, was seen wielding a machete, banging on doors, and displaying erratic behavior. Witnesses reported that Reynolds had a history of mental health challenges and was possibly under the influence at the time of the incident.
As officers arrived, they found that Reynolds had been shot by a resident following a physical altercation. Details about the confrontation leading to the shooting have not been fully disclosed, but it was reported that the armed resident acted in self-defense.
