Self-Defense Confirmed In Fatal Glenwood Bar Shooting Over Parking Dispute, No Charges Filed

GLENWOOD, IL (2-minute read) — A fatal shooting outside a Glenwood bar on February 23 has been ruled self-defense, with police confirming that no charges will be filed against the shooter. The incident, which occurred outside Chug A Lug at 184th and Halsted around 1:30 a.m., resulted in the death of 31-year-old James Honey of Tinley Park.

According to Glenwood police, an argument over parking quickly escalated, leading to gunfire. Investigators reviewed hours of surveillance footage, conducted witness interviews, processed forensic evidence, and examined findings from the medical examiner before presenting the case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors ultimately declined to pursue charges, ruling the shooting was justified.

Authorities confirmed that Honey had a firearm at the scene. The shooter, who legally owned and carried his firearm under Illinois’ concealed carry laws, immediately turned the gun over to police. Officials stated that the two individuals had no prior conflict and did not know each other before the dispute.

The case is now considered closed, according to Glenwood Police Chief Derek Peddycord.

Safety Tip: If you carry a firearm for self-defense, always be aware of your surroundings and avoid unnecessary confrontations. De-escalation is often the best strategy to prevent a situation from turning violent.
