Missouri Homeowner Shoots and Kills Intruder During Burglary Attempt

SCOTT CITY, MO — On Saturday, August 24, 2024, a homeowner in Scott City, Missouri, defended himself after a burglar forced entry into his home, resulting in the intruder’s death. The incident occurred around 2:43 p.m., when officers from the Scott City Police Department, with assistance from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, responded to a report of a burglary in progress.

According to the Scott City Police Department, the homeowner called 911 after hearing his back door being kicked in. The homeowner confronted the intruder, identified as 42-year-old Jason L. Vermillion of Scott City, and fired his handgun in self-defense. Vermillion was shot and later succumbed to his injuries at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Upon arrival, officers were met by the homeowner, who directed them to the scene of the shooting. The officers immediately began life-saving measures, which were continued by Emergency Medical Services and first responders from the Scott City Fire Department. Despite their efforts, Vermillion was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The scene was processed and investigated as a homicide, but the police determined that the homeowner acted in self-defense. “At this time, we are not seeking charges on the homeowner; with the efforts of the officers as they thoroughly investigated the scene, the homeowner was acting in self-defense and was protecting himself and his property,” said Chief Christopher M. Griggs of the Scott City Police Department.

This incident highlights the importance of being prepared to protect oneself in the event of a home invasion. While it is always advisable to have a security system in place and to call 911 immediately, having the means to defend yourself when faced with an immediate threat is crucial. It is essential for homeowners to understand their state’s laws regarding self-defense and to ensure they are acting within legal boundaries when protecting their homes and families.
