Memphis Robbery Suspect Wielding Two Guns Opens Fire After Brother Tries to Defend, Injuring Teen

MEMPHIS, TN — A routine stop at a local convenience store turned violent Wednesday night when an attempted robbery escalated into a shootout, leaving a teenager wounded.

Memphis police responded to Prescott Mart on Sharpe Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found a 17-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound to the thigh.

According to witnesses and surveillance footage, a suspect entered the store and attempted to rob two individuals at gunpoint. The suspect, described as a young male between 17 and 20 years old, wore blue jeans, a green hooded jacket, and checkered house shoes. As he demanded valuables, the teen at the register became aware of the threat.

At some point during the encounter, the victim’s brother drew his firearm and opened fire on the armed suspect. In response, the suspect—who was wielding two handguns—began shooting back while retreating. Surveillance footage, which can be viewed on Action News 5’s website, captures the suspect running down an aisle with a firearm in each hand, firing one as he moved before taking cover and returning fire with both guns. He then fled the store, continuing to shoot as he exited.

The suspect was last seen running eastbound on Sharpe Avenue, and police are continuing their search.

Knowing When to Draw

This tragic incident highlights a critical decision all armed citizens must consider—when to draw and engage versus when compliance might be the safer option. The victim’s brother acted in defense, but the suspect already had weapons drawn and was prepared to fire. Once a gunfight begins, bystanders, including loved ones, can become unintended victims. While self-defense is a fundamental right, knowing when to act and when to de-escalate can be just as important.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact Memphis police.
