MANTECA, CA (2-minute read) — A city councilor in Manteca, California, shot his stepson in what authorities believe was a case of self-defense following an alleged domestic attack. The incident occurred Thursday afternoon at the home of Vice Mayor David Breitenbucher, located on Yolo Street.

According to police, Breitenbucher’s stepson, who does not reside at the home, entered the residence and allegedly attacked and threatened to kill the councilor. In response, Breitenbucher used his personal firearm to defend himself, firing at least one round into the stepson’s abdomen. Immediately after the incident, Breitenbucher called 911 to report the shooting.

Both Breitenbucher and his stepson sustained injuries during the confrontation. Breitenbucher suffered a head injury, while the stepson was taken to a hospital to treat the gunshot wound. Both are currently receiving medical attention.

The Manteca Police Department has confirmed that no arrests have been made at this time. They emphasized that the situation remains under investigation as detectives gather more details about the confrontation.

David Breitenbucher, who serves as vice mayor and represents District 3, has been a member of the Manteca City Council for six years. Before his tenure in public office, he served with the Manteca Fire Department, retiring in 2016.

Safety Tip: Always familiarize yourself with your state’s self-defense laws and ensure that your firearm is securely stored when not in use to prevent unauthorized access.
