A Hobbs home invasion led to two deaths after homeowners shot an intruder during a break-in. Police are investigating the incident.

HOBBS, NM (1-minute read) — The Hobbs Police Department (HPD) is currently investigating a shooting incident that resulted in two deaths early Friday morning. The tragic event unfolded after officers responded to a call in the 2100 block of North Rojo, where a break-in had been reported.

Upon arrival, authorities learned that 38-year-old Curtis Thames had allegedly forced his way into a nearby residence. In fear for their safety, the homeowners barricaded themselves inside a bedroom and armed themselves with a firearm. At some point during the tense situation, they discharged a shot through the bedroom door, striking Thames. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but despite medical efforts, Thames succumbed to his injuries.

During the investigation, officers were informed that Curtis’s mother, Kristie Thames, resided in the home next door. After unsuccessful attempts to make contact with her, police forced entry into the neighboring residence to check her well-being. Tragically, they found Mrs. Thames deceased in a bedroom.

While the exact circumstances leading to the mother’s death remain unclear, HPD continues to investigate the case thoroughly. Authorities have indicated that this is only preliminary information, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation proceeds.

Safety Tip: When defending your home, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of local laws regarding the use of deadly force. Always prioritize retreat and securing safety before discharging a firearm.
