Irresponsible Gun Owner: Father Charged After Toddler’s Death Linked To Unsafe Firearm Storage

A High Point man faces charges after his toddler’s tragic death, caused by unsafe firearm storage that allowed a child to fire the fatal shot. The incident has led to multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse.

HIGH POINT, NC (2-minute read) — A tragic incident in High Point has led to charges against Julian Helbert, 26, of Kernersville, following the shooting death of his toddler. Investigators from the High Point Police Department’s Special Victims Unit found that a child under 10 years old had fired the shot, ultimately causing the toddler’s death.

Authorities determined that Helbert failed to secure a loaded firearm properly, enabling access to the weapon. This oversight resulted in the fatal incident and prompted several serious charges against him. Helbert faces counts of involuntary manslaughter, felony child abuse, and unsafe firearm storage to protect minors.

Further investigations revealed unrelated offenses, including possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for illegal activity, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Helbert is currently in custody at the Guilford County Jail with a $250,000 bond set against him.

This tragedy underscores the critical importance of responsible firearm storage, especially in households with children. Firearms should always be stored unloaded, locked away, and inaccessible to minors to prevent devastating incidents like this one.

Safety Tip: Always store firearms unloaded, locked in a secure place, and separate from ammunition. Educate children about firearm safety and the potential dangers of mishandling firearms.
