Iowa Lowers Legal Age For Handgun Ownership To 18

Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a bill lowering the legal age to own and carry a handgun in Iowa to 18, effective July 1st. The law is being praised by Second Amendment advocates and criticized by those concerned about youth and gun safety.

DES MOINES, IA (2-minute read) — Starting July 1st, 18-year-olds in lowa will legally be allowed to own and carry handguns, following the passage of a new law signed by Governor Kim Reynolds. The legislation permits young adults to possess pistols, revolvers, and ammunition-extending rights they already had for owning long guns like rifles and shotguns.

Supporters of the new law argue that age-based restrictions on handgun ownership were unfair and discriminatory. They assert that if 18-year-olds can vote, join the military, and be held fully accountable under the law, they should also be trusted with the constitutional right to bear arms.

Governor Reynolds’ signing of the bill has ignited strong reactions across the state and beyond. Gun rights advocates view the measure as a significant step forward for the Second Amendment, while critics worry about the implications of allowing younger adults access to handguns.

Expanding Firearm Rights to Young Adults in Iowa

Previously, individuals had to be at least 21 to carry a handgun in public or own one legally without parental supervision. This new law removes that barrier and could result in a noticeable increase in handgun ownership among 18 to 20-year-olds. The change also aligns Iowa more closely with other pro-gun states that have reduced age limits for firearm possession.

This development emphasizes the importance of firearm education, responsible storage, and training for young adults who are newly empowered to carry. Organizations promoting responsible gun ownership have urged new carriers to seek out safety courses and understand Iowa’s carry laws in depth.

Safety Tip: If you’re new to firearm ownership, always start with a certified safety course. Understand your state laws, and make responsible storage a priority—especially if others live in your home.
