SPANISH FORT, AL — A 17-year-old male is in stable but critical condition after being shot by a homeowner during a reported home invasion in the early hours of Saturday, March 22nd, in the Spanish Fort Estates neighborhood.

According to a statement released by the Spanish Fort Police Department, officers responded at approximately 12:15 a.m. to a residence on Caisson Trace following reports of a home invasion involving a gunshot wound. Investigators say the teenage suspect forcibly entered the home through a front window while under the influence of an unknown substance.

The homeowner’s wife was startled awake by the sound of breaking glass and alerted her husband. The man retrieved a pistol and, upon encountering the intruder inside the home, fired one shot, striking the teen in the abdomen. Three children were reportedly asleep in the home at the time of the incident.

Emergency medical aid was rendered by responding officers until the teen was airlifted to University Hospital in Mobile, where he underwent surgery. According to FOX10 News, the teen sustained injuries to several internal organs, including his pancreas, liver, stomach, and spleen.

Police Chief John Barber confirmed the juvenile had been at a nearby friend’s house earlier in the evening, and investigators believe he may have mistakenly targeted the wrong house. The teen’s father told FOX10 that his son had been drinking that night and likely confused the residence for his friend’s.

“He remembers going to his friend’s house, he remembers drinking… he doesn’t remember anything else,” the father said. He suggested his son may have fallen through the window unintentionally, believing it was his friend’s home.

Despite

the circumstances, police confirmed that the homeowner was not charged and was released at the scene. Authorities stated the evidence so far supports the homeowner’s actions as self-defense.

The 17-year-old suspect, who does not have a criminal record, is expected to face charges, pending further investigation. The case will be presented to a grand jury.

This incident highlights the importance of readiness and clear situational awareness during the critical moments of a home intrusion. Homeowners must be prepared to act swiftly when confronted with a threat, especially when family members are present. While the situation is tragic, it also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of real-world self-defense encounters—especially when the intruder is impaired or acting irrationally. Knowing your state laws and having a home defense plan in place are essential steps for all responsible gun owners.
