House Party Turns Violent in Michigan: 5 Shot, Armed Civilian Responds

STERLING HEIGHTS, MI — A house party turned violent in the early hours of January 10 when a dispute between two guests escalated into gunfire, leaving five individuals injured, including three bystanders. Police say the incident could have turned deadly if not for the swift response of an armed partygoer and officers trained in emergency medical aid.

According to the Sterling Heights Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of 14 Mile Road at approximately 1:20 a.m. in response to reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. A fifth victim had already transported herself to a hospital. One of the victims was critically wounded, but police were able to apply a tourniquet at the scene, likely saving that individual’s life.

Investigators report that the violence began inside the home when 23-year-old Duan Giovanni Bradley of Detroit got into a verbal altercation with another guest. The confrontation continued outside the residence, where Bradley allegedly walked to the end of the driveway and opened fire toward the house, striking three bystanders. In response, the other armed guest returned fire in self-defense, wounding Bradley.

All injured parties were adults and are currently listed in stable condition. Police confirmed that both Bradley and the armed defender were taken into custody while being treated at a local hospital.

On January 12, Bradley was arraigned before Magistrate Jean M. Cloud in the 41A District Court on the following charges:

  • Three counts of Assault with Intent to Murder (life felony)
  • Three counts of Felony Firearm (2-year mandatory sentence, consecutive)
  • One count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon (5-year felony)

Bradley’s bond was set at $1 million cash/surety with no 10% option. If released, he must wear a steel cuff tether and is barred from contacting the victims, possessing weapons, or approaching the residence where the shooting occurred. His pretrial hearing is scheduled for January 26, and a preliminary exam is set for February 2 before Judge Kimberley Anne Wiegand.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido issued a statement emphasizing the seriousness of the charges and the need for accountability, saying, “The allegations in this case are a stark reminder that disputes cannot be settled with weapons.”

While the investigation is ongoing, police commend the emergency response, noting that life-saving measures such as the use of a tourniquet were critical. The cooperation of the Troy and Warren Police Departments was also acknowledged.

This incident underscores the value of both responsible concealed carry and emergency medical training. The armed guest’s decisive action may have prevented further harm, and officers’ ability to manage severe bleeding highlights the importance of immediate trauma care in active shooting situations. Gun owners should consider carrying a tourniquet and becoming trained in basic trauma response alongside their self-defense preparations.
