RIO RANCHO, NM — Late on the night of January 25, 2025, a Rio Rancho homeowner acted decisively to protect his family during a terrifying home invasion in the 1500 block of 12th Street SE. The incident ended with the suspect being fatally wounded.
According to the Rio Rancho Police Department, the events unfolded around 11:55 p.m. when a suspect approached the residence and began forcefully kicking the front door. Inside the home, two adults and three children were asleep. The repeated kicks eventually allowed the intruder to break through the door and enter the home.
Hearing the commotion, the homeowner quickly armed himself and went to investigate. Upon encountering the intruder, the situation escalated into a confrontation, during which the homeowner discharged his firearm once, striking the suspect in the torso.
Emergency responders transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Fortunately, no one inside the residence was harmed. The homeowner cooperated fully with police and was released after questioning. Authorities are continuing their investigation, and the case will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
