ENGLEWOOD, OH (2-minute read) — An early morning home intrusion turned fatal in Englewood, Ohio, when a homeowner shot and killed an alleged burglar. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Friday on the 600 block of Overla Boulevard, where a couple reportedly heard someone trying to enter their home. While one of them called 911, the other prepared to defend their property.

During the 911 call, gunshots could be heard after a confrontation ensued. When police arrived, they discovered 43-year-old Matthew Culham lying in the side yard of the residence. According to Englewood Police Chief Corey Follick, the homeowner initially thought the intruder had fled and went outside to check his property. However, the suspect confronted him in the street, prompting the homeowner to fire three shots in fear for his life.

Chief Follick described Culham’s behavior as atypical for a burglar, noting that most intruders retreat when they realize a home is occupied. Toxicology tests are underway to determine whether substances may have influenced Culham’s actions.

The evidence at the scene supports the couple’s account of events, but questions remain regarding the motives behind Culham’s unusual behavior. With only one homicide per year on average in the past decade, this incident has shaken the normally quiet community of Englewood.

Safety Tip: Always maintain a safe distance from potential intruders, even if you suspect they’ve left. Ensure you are legally informed about self-defense laws in your state before owning a firearm.
