Corpus Christi Homeowner Arrested After Delayed 911 Call in Fatal Shooting

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — Corpus Christi detectives have arrested Douglas Watters, 56, following the shooting death of an intruder at his home. The incident, which occurred on July 28, has raised concerns due to a four-hour delay in reporting the shooting to authorities.

According to local media, officers were dispatched to Watters’ residence on the 7000 block of Brandon Dr. after receiving a 911 call about a residential burglary. Upon arrival, officers found the home appeared abandoned and without power. Watters informed the police that he had shot an intruder who had broken into his home.

Further investigation revealed that a 48-year-old male intruder had been shot and killed inside the house. Officers discovered the deceased man in a back room, noting that rigor mortis had begun to set in, indicating he had been dead for some time. A woman who was reportedly with the intruder at the time had left the scene before police arrived.

Watters claimed that the intruders had entered through a window covered with plywood. However, he did not provide an explanation for why he delayed calling 911 for several hours after the shooting. This delay became a critical factor in the investigation, leading authorities to question the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On Monday night, at approximately 8:55 p.m., Corpus Christi Police Department Gang Officers arrested Watters at the 3600 block of La Paz Drive. He was transported to the City Detention Center for booking. An arrest warrant for murder was issued shortly after the investigation began, with Watters’ bond set at $500,000.

This case highlights the importance of promptly reporting incidents involving the use of deadly force. While Texas law provides for the use of deadly force in certain circumstances, it also requires that such actions be immediately reported to law enforcement. Delays in reporting can lead to complications in the investigation and potential legal consequences.

As this investigation continues, the authorities are focused on uncovering all the facts surrounding the shooting and the delayed 911 call. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
