Businessman Defends Himself Against Homeless Attack

A downtown Anderson shooting may be justified under Indiana law, as stated by the local prosecutor. The incident involved a businessman using a firearm in self-defense after being attacked by a homeless individual.

ANDERSON, IN (2-minute read) — A shooting that occurred in downtown Anderson may be legally justified according to local authorities. The incident, which took place just before 10 p.m. on a Monday, involved a 51-year-old businessman and a 43-year-old homeless man named Michael Piercy.

According to Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings, the businessman was participating in a Pokémon-style scavenger hunt on his phone when he was unexpectedly attacked. Piercy allegedly punched the businessman in the face and stole his phone. In response, the victim drew his firearm and fatally shot Piercy in a nearby parking lot, just a short distance from the Madison County Courthouse.

Despite the lack of a weapon on Piercy at the time of the Anderson shooting, Cummings stated that Indiana law permits individuals to use deadly force in self-defense if they reasonably believe they are at risk of serious injury or death. He emphasized that the evidence presented so far supports a strong case for self-defense.

The Anderson shooting has sparked discussions on self-defense laws and firearm use within the community. Indiana law clearly stipulates that individuals have the right to protect themselves and their property.

Before the shooting, Piercy was reported to have threatened several other people in the downtown area, adding to the context of the businessman’s perceived threat. Cummings remarked that while the incident ended in a fatality, it might have had even more severe consequences had the victim not been armed.

In a press release, Anderson police confirmed that the altercation between the two men led to the shooting. They are continuing their investigation and have not made any arrests. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward, encouraging the community to assist in the ongoing investigation.

For those with relevant information, Detective Cliff Cole can be contacted at (765) 648-6654. Additionally, anonymous tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).

Safety Tip: Always be aware of your surroundings and understand your state’s self-defense laws. Proper training and knowledge can be crucial in high-stress situations.
