Battle Creek Police Disarm 5-Year-Old Who Answered Door With Knife, Then Loaded Handgun

BATTLE CREEK, MI — A potentially tragic situation unfolded on Saturday, January 25, when a Battle Creek Police cadet disarmed a five-year-old child holding a loaded handgun during a routine subpoena service at a residence on Inn Road.

The incident began when the cadet knocked on the door and was met by the young child, who initially answered holding a large kitchen knife. The cadet calmly instructed the child to get an adult. However, moments later, the child returned to the door with a loaded handgun. The cadet immediately removed the firearm and called for backup. Road patrol officers soon arrived on the scene to secure the situation.

Inside the home, officers found two adult males and one adult female, who were detained and later transported to the police department for questioning. The home’s conditions were described as “deplorable,” prompting immediate intervention by Child Protective Services (CPS). Five children, ranging in age from 8 years old to just 6 months, were removed from the residence. One of the children required medical attention and was transported by LifeCare Ambulance to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital, and later to a Kalamazoo hospital for further care.

Due to the hazardous living conditions and the presence of unsecured firearms, the property was condemned by Code Compliance. Authorities are pursuing multiple charges, including child neglect and weapons violations, through the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Importance of Safe Storage and Responsible Firearm Practices

This incident highlights the vital responsibility of firearm owners to ensure their guns are securely stored, especially in homes with children. Preventing unauthorized access to firearms is a fundamental aspect of responsible gun ownership and can help avert potentially tragic situations.

Safe storage practices, such as using gun safes, lockboxes, or cable locks, are essential tools to keep firearms out of the hands of children and other unauthorized users. Ammunition should also be stored separately, and children should be educated about firearm safety to reduce curiosity and foster respect for firearms.

The quick actions of the Battle Creek cadet prevented a tragedy, but this situation serves as a stark reminder for gun owners: securing firearms isn’t just about safety — it’s about protecting lives. By taking proactive steps to properly store firearms, gun owners can do their part to create a safer environment for everyone in the household.
