Armed Customers Stop Knife-Wielding Man at Verizon Store

MARBLE FALLS, TX — An elderly man was arrested after threatening staff at a Verizon Wireless store with a knife on July 23, 2024. The incident occurred at around 2 p.m. at the store located at 2600 U.S. 281, next to Cinergy Cinemas. Charles Jones, 80, of Kingsland, reportedly demanded access to the back of the store and brandished a knife when employees refused.

According to local media, two armed customers present at the scene quickly intervened, drawing their firearms and ordering Jones to drop the knife and lie on the ground. The quick response of these individuals ensured that the situation did not escalate further. Marble Falls police officers and Burnet County sheriff’s deputies arrived within minutes of the initial 911 call.

According to Marble Falls Police Capt. Jimmy Cole, the involvement of an elderly individual in such an incident is uncommon, raising concerns about Jones’s mental state. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Jones was taken into custody and transported to the Burnet County Jail. He faces serious charges, including two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of terroristic threat against a public servant. Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is classified as a second-degree felony, potentially resulting in a prison sentence of two to twenty years and a fine of up to $10,000. The charge of terroristic threat against a public servant, a third-degree felony, carries a possible sentence of two to ten years in prison and a similar fine.

This incident highlights the importance of responsible gun ownership and the potential for armed citizens to prevent violence. Always prioritize de-escalation and only use your firearm when absolutely necessary to protect yourself or others from imminent harm.
