Armed Citizen Fatally Shoots Carjacking Suspect In DeKalb County

A man attempting to carjack a vehicle on North Hairston Road in DeKalb County was fatally shot Friday evening. Authorities are still investigating and have not released the suspect’s identity or said whether charges will be filed.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (2-minute read) — An armed citizen shot and killed a suspect during an attempted carjacking Friday evening on North Hairston Road in DeKalb County, Georgia. Police say officers were dispatched just after 6 p.m. to the area near Sister 2 Sister Cafe Halal, where they located the suspect suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, the suspect later died from his injuries.

Investigators determined that the suspect had attempted to steal a vehicle when the armed citizen defended themselves. The identity of the deceased suspect has not been publicly released. It remains unclear at this time whether the armed citizen will face any charges, with authorities saying the investigation is ongoing.

Georgia Self-Defense Laws

Georgia law allows the use of deadly force to prevent death, serious bodily harm, or the commission of a forcible felony — such as carjacking. Under the state’s Stand Your Ground statute, an individual is not required to retreat before acting in self-defense.
