Armed Citizen And Suspect Killed In Shootout During Failed Robbery Attempt

PLEASANT HILL, CA (2-minute read) – In a tragic turn of events in Pleasant Hill, a second person has succumbed to injuries following a shooting at a local cannabis store on Tuesday. Authorities have named the deceased suspect as Trevon Davis, 21, from San Pablo. The other person killed was identified as Peter Popovich, 63, from Pleasant Hill.

The incident unfolded when Pleasant Hill Police were called to the scene after reports of gunfire at a cannabis retail outlet located on Twinbridge Circle near Longbrook Way. Upon arrival, officers discovered Davis and Popovich, both sustaining gunshot wounds, lying on the ground. According to police, the two men were strangers to each other before the incident.

Investigations revealed that Popovich, a delivery driver for the legal cannabis industry, was at the store during a robbery attempt. Davis, alongside at least one other accomplice, targeted Popovich, who was legally armed at the time. The confrontation escalated into a shootout.

Both men were rushed to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where Popovich was declared deceased on Tuesday, and Davis later died due to his injuries.

Authorities have since retrieved Popovich’s firearm and confirmed he held a valid concealed carry permit issued by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. The search continues for at least one other suspect who fled the scene. No arrests have been made to date.

This ongoing investigation urges anyone with information to contact the Pleasant Hill Investigations Bureau at (925) 288-4630.

Firearm Safety Tip: Always secure your firearm when not in use to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. Regularly practice safe firearm handling and storage.
