Angled Spade Patents Safety Upgrade For Sig P320 After Sig Declines Offer; REPORT

Angled Spade Technologies has patented a new safety mechanism for the Sig Sauer P320 that blocks the sear when the manual safety is engaged. After reportedly offering Sig the first right of refusal and receiving no interest, AST proceeded with its own development and patent process.

SUFFIELD, CT (2-minute read) — Angled Spade Technologies, LLC (AST) has officially announced the publication of U.S. Patent Application US20250164203A1, introducing a new firearm safety mechanism designed specifically for the Sig Sauer® P320® platform. The patent reflects a significant innovation: a mechanism that physically prevents the sear from moving when the manual safety is engaged, a feature that has never been part of the P320’s original design.

The idea originated during an engineering project involving Brian McDonald, a former Sig Sauer employee who has since worked independently as a consultant. Although McDonald once worked for Sig, the company had no involvement in the development of the patent and was not part of the project, according to the company’s press release.

Joe Salvador, Partner and Engineer at AST, explained the motivation behind the new design. “Our solution physically blocks the sear’s movement when the manual safety is engaged. Something that, to date, has not been a feature of the P320 and its variants,” he stated.

In a noteworthy move in 2023, shortly after the provisional patent was filed, AST reportedly extended an offer of first right of refusal to Sig Sauer, essentially giving the company the opportunity to acquire or license the safety enhancement. Sig reportedly declined to pursue the opportunity. As a result, AST continued independently, pushing the patent through to publication and continuing the refinement of their design.

Why This Matters for Firearm Safety

The AST safety mechanism is designed to enhance existing manual safeties without altering the P320’s appearance, ergonomics, or performance. For firearm owners who carry regularly, whether for personal defense or in a professional capacity, this kind of upgrade introduces an extra layer of mechanical assurance that the firearm will not discharge unless intentionally fired.

AST emphasizes that the innovation doesn’t compromise the platform’s feel or function. Instead, it brings modern safety expectations in line with a widely adopted firearm.

Safety Tip: Always understand the internal safety mechanisms of your firearm. Even if you carry a model with a manual safety, consider how additional safety features may affect your training and handling routines.
