BESSEMER, ALABAMA — A 19-year-old male was fatally shot in Bessemer on Tuesday afternoon following a violent altercation. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim but is withholding his name until his family is notified.

The incident, described as a possible home invasion, occurred at 1:44 p.m. in the 1300 block of Hearn Avenue, according to Bessemer police Det. Justin Burmeister. It involved a stabbing and a shooting: the stabbing victim, whose condition is unknown, retaliated by shooting the individual who stabbed him.

The 19-year-old was declared dead at the scene at 2:22 p.m.

While the investigation is ongoing, with detectives still piecing together the details, the shooting is currently considered to be a justified act of self-defense.
