Hey there everyone. Anyone else just kinda tired post-election?
It is Weekend Open Thread time, and this past weekend had an unfortunate, but highly memeable event.
We have tried to stay out of the political fray during the run-up to the election.
This was an unexpected turn however. From Telegraph.co.uk:
P’Nut and his lesser-known friend Fred the raccoon were confiscated and later euthanised after the Longo home was raided by state agents from the Democrat-run New York Department of Environmental Conservation on Oct 30.
In the closing days of the 2024 election, social media-star P’Nut (who also went by Peanut) became a Republican mascot, a martyr to government overreach, a victim of civil liberties restrictions in a country that prizes freedom and inherent rebelliousness, and so much more.
On Wednesday Dani, 28, was opening dozens of Amazon delivery boxes — gifts from supporters, much of it animal feed — on the porch of the farmhouse where the married couple live. Outside are 70 horses, many of whom had been abused or saved from being put down, llamas, goats, seven miniature horses, two donkeys, geese and duck and a white dog.
To Republicans, the story of the seven-year old squirrel came to symbolize Republican warnings about continuing big government overreach in the event of a Kamala Harris win. In death, P’Nut, often pictured in a cowboy hat, became more of a viral sensation than he had been even in life.
I didn’t share many election related memes, unless they were mostly neutral in tone with regards to the candidates themselves.
However, unlike election politics, the WOT developed its present form as a reaction to government overreach during covid. Especially once it became clear the pandemic was being used as a mechanism of control over the populace, and was serving no public health benefit.
So in this case, a lowly squirrel, and his adoptive brother racoon, are dead because of a paperwork snafu.
The memes blew up online, and were quickly adopted by the right side of the political spectrum as both an avatar of a coercive government, as well as a rallying cry in the waning days of the campaign.
Did P’Nut the squirrel tip the election? Who knows, but Twitter/X was a must-refresh all of last weekend.
I don’t think anyone had an internet squirrel rallying the electorate on their November bingo card.
Apropos…
I think that is from Inglorious Basterds.
The Ghost of P’Nut might have gotten the last laugh…
He was there for us in our darkest hour…
It wasn’t just P’nut that impacted the election. State agents in PA raided an Amish dairy farm in in 2023, which motivated the Amish to register to vote in large numbers.
There are a lot of Amish in PA, and they never used to vote.
Well, yes…
But P’Nut did not die in vain. In fact, he saved us all…
Which means you are free to attend a Knife Show…
Next Weekend:
Stay tuned to the Events Calendar for the latest.
Tonight’s musical guest is the great Quincy Jones, who passed away this week. The man was a musician, one of the most legendary producers of all time, and even an actor.
Streetbeater, better known as the theme from Sanford and Son, is a tremendous piece of jazz/funk. Most people only know a minute of the song. Listen to the whole thing.
Again, now that the election is over, I don’t feel like I need to be quite as delicate with memes that are from a more right/libertarian perspective.
I think Penn Gillette said it even better…
I can’t personally say I am disappointed in the outcome, though I am not a full-throated MAGA devotee. And the Libertarian Party was an even bigger joke than normal. Sad to think we peaked with Gary Johnson.
Early night returns are always amusing.
Whelp, that didn’t take long…
Someone needs to come up with a pop-up store for the other 9 months of the year.
Like it was all just an act. You can rest easy Del. You aren’t facing an invasion of crying American celebrities.
I died twice. And I didn’t even live in a swing state.
Despite our differences, there are a few issues of common ground…
As do the Clowns…
This is good…
But this isn’t…
And the final word on the election…
Or…
My CRKT goodie box did not arrive this week, though I am assured it is on its way. So we are taking a week off from actually having a drawing. but this week we do have 3 hat winners.
Our new commenter Rod picked “hat i” , the grey Case in the lower left corner. So Mark R., Steve T, and Hocky (in that order) get to chose from among the others, Let me know in the comments. I will have a new prize to announce next week.
As always, we have a good crop of non-themed memes for you this week as well.
Narrator: “But he didn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition after all…”
The more you know…
I miss when they were like “liquid-hot mag-ma”
Every time…
It is such a dark tale for a musical…
This…
As Fred Bear said:
The best camouflage pattern is called, “Sit down and be quiet!” Your grandpa hunted deer in a red plaid coat. Think about that for a second.
I still want one of those read, plaid, flannel coats. Just can’t wear it too often in TN.
Unjust arrest. This legend needs to be freed.
“It’s not me, it’s you”
I wonder if in his darkest days and wildest dreams, Danny Trejo ever believed that he would one day be a beloved icon.
As God is my witness…
THe NPS has a strong social media game…
Oklahoma DoW says hold my water bottle…
Sure it is.
Side quests are fun.
Don’t forget to tip your waitress…
It was foretold in the prophesies…
I couldn’t find this in the Haynes manual.
Consider yourself lucky…
Gamers can relate…
They made the meme…
Poor guy…
2 cloves of garlic is a garnish…
Justifiable…
Changing gears for a moment…
I am taking a moment out of this, our most viewed post each week, to voice my support for Israel.
Why do I do this? Because I support our ally Israel, the only pluralistic Democracy in the middle east. The Jewish people are facing an existential threat. There was a literal pogrom in Amsterdam the other night, when migrant rioters attacked Jews leaving a soccer match.
Even more disturbing is that students are being attacked on college campi in this country as well.
The antisemitic hate on the streets of the west is something I never imagined I would see, having grown up with “Never Again” drilled into my very being. It makes me sick, and to watch it being coddled by factions on the American left chills me to my core.
But there are signs that things might be changing, following the election, Qatar has told Hamas officials that they were no longer welcome.
All Hamas has to do is release the hostages and step down. Then the war that they started will end,.
Bring them home now.
Another of Quincy Jones’ more recognizable tunes. I admit, I knew it from Austin Powers, but this video certainly shows where they got the idea to use it in the film. It’s wild.
She even looks a bit like Elizabeth Hurley.
That isn’t such good advice. Leads to stuff like this…
It is a risk worth taking.
I can think of no better way to wrap this thing up than with this one…
Thank you P’Nut… you saved us all…
