The knife was among the first tools created by man. Early versions were rudimentary — handle, edge, done. But the knives we own and use today are complex devices machined for a range of purposes.
Materials like wood, steel, titanium, bronze, bone — along with the keen eyes and attention to detail employed by a group of highly-specialized individuals — define today’s best-in-class examples.
Over the past 40 years, the following designers have ushered in a new era in the evolution of the pocket knife, and they’re only getting started.
A really arbitrary list. 4 titans from the last 30 years, and 3 younger designers, who certainly belong on a list of excellent and influential designers, but it makes the list disjointed. For instance, the first 4 had a major impact on mechanism/locks. Seems like Demko could be on this list.
I think it would be better to break it into two parts, with a list that has Dmitry, Lens, and Jesper, and adds makers like Dirk Pinkerton, Richard Rogers, and others.
