If you are a cinema fan and an enthusiastic collector at the same time, you perceive films differently. In addition to the plot, visual processing or acting performances, you also notice details that remain hidden from the average viewer. Props get their proper names and become part of the story. Thompson, Vz.61, Charger, Mach 1 or UH-1. Names and designations unknown to most people. For you, however, they conceal the whole story, adventure stories, technological wonders or human destinies. It’s no different if you are a fan of knives of all kinds. And this article is for you. We will select some iconic film blades and tell you a little more about them.

Rambo (First Blood)
Sylvester Stallone, in the role of John Rambo, is one of the most iconic action figures of the 80s. Rambo has had a variety of different weapons in his hands over the course of his life. However, only one knife from First Blood will remain in the memory of fans and collectors.
The Rambo knife is specific. This is not a production model. The knife was made specially for the film by knifemaker Jimmy Lile. Lile designed a knife that could handle a variety of outdoor and tactical tasks, primarily associated with survival in the wild. The knife handle is hollow and conceals forensic survival equipment such as fishing hooks or matches. The head of the handle also has a compass hidden inside. Lile took a pragmatic approach to the choice of steel and opted for D2 tool steel, which is semi-stainless.
The Rambo knife is basically a classic. The filmmakers didn’t choose something that would just look rough. Instead, they found a knifemaker and gave him the opportunity to design something that would fully match the character of the protagonist. The result is one of the most iconic survival knives of all time.
About 1000 original copies of the knife were made for this film.
Numbers 1-6 were used in the film, all with 14 saw teeth and all supposedly destroyed during the filming. Whether they were really destroyed, we can only guess.
Lile kept numbers 7-14 for himself, all but the last one with 14 saw teeth.
Numbers 15-100 were sold. About 800 unnumbered knives were sold to collectors.
If you want an original Rambo knife from the film, be prepared to spend a lot of money. The Rambo knife had such an influence on the design of the survival knife that you would hardly look for one that didn’t resemble it at least a little. For example, the Bark River Bravo is a knife that would serve the modern-day Rambo well.
COLD STEEL LARGE ESPADA (THE EXPENDABLES)
We have another Stallone film on the list, but this time with an iconic character played by Mickey Rourke – Tools. Tools, with fellow badass Christmas (Jason Statham), wins a knife-throwing contest with the Large Espada, which he hides in a boot. Seeing this nearly 16-inch folding knife used as a throwing weapon is one of those scenes that make action movies fantastic. Large Espada is known for its striking, aggressive design and size. After all, it’s not for people who want to blend in with the crowd.
Espada is hard to forget when you meet it in person. For most people, it’s too big to wear every day. If you’re looking for a combat-ready blade that you can hide in a boot, Espada is an easy choice for you. There is a standard model with polished shafts and a more practical model with a G-10 handle.
It is made of standard AUS-8A steel, but some of the newer models use a higher-quality CTS-XHP. If you find the Large Espada too small, it also has a bigger brother, the Espada XL, with a 20-centimetre blade.
SPYDERCO POLICE (TRAINING DAY)
Alonzo Harris, played by Denzel Washington, is a corrupt detective, a criminal with a badge. However, his charisma and charm made him, like in the character of Hannibal Lecter, a sympathetic character. His methods inspire admiration, as does his style. His equipment deserves the same admiration. Spyderco Police is one of his EDCs.
Police is available in different designs, but the one Alonz has is a classic. It is made of stainless steel and has a 10-centimetre fully serrated blade. With such a large blade, you can expect the knife to be designed for heavy-duty use and self-defence. And so it is. With an optimal blade length and teeth that tear through fabric, the knife is an excellent tool for close combat.
TEAM GEMINI LB (WALKING DEAD)
In a post-apocalyptic series full of strong characters, Daryl Dixon is unlike any other. There is something about zombie apocalypse movies that brings out the survivalist in most people. In TWD, however, it feels like Dixon was born with it and has spent his whole life preparing for the day the undead take over the world.
He is quiet and secretive, but at the same time pragmatic. His brutal but specific approach to problems made him one of the most popular characters. As it turns out, Daryl Dixon is not only a great archer, but also has excellent knife taste.
His blade of choice is a Busse Team Gemini LB. Busse is a small knife company best known for its Battle Mistress model. With a blade length of almost 20 centimetres, Gemini is designed to handle a variety of camping and hunting tasks or be a welcome aid when you run out of ammo in a pack of zombies.
The Busse-patented steel from INFI is designed for extreme toughness. Team Gemini can withstand a lot of abuse without splintering or breaking.
Ka-Bar – The Pacific
We can choose dozens of films and series that make Ka-Bar famous. There is Jon Berenthal’s Punisher, Iwo Jima John Wayne’s Letters and dozens more. I chose the HBO miniseries, directed by the famous Tom Hanks, because Ka-Bar is a notable guest star.
Ka-Bar became a USMC (US Marine Corps) combat knife during World War II and continues to do so today.
Ka-Bar was developed to meet the needs of soldiers and marines in any environment. With its blade length of 18 centimetres and its design, it is a purebred military combat knife. The blade serves as a cutting tool, wood-chopping tool, shovel, hammer and so that its tip hits the vital organs of the enemy on each side of the torso.
Ka-Bar shares its image with legends such as the M1 Garand, BAR or Colt 1911 and still demands the same special attention. Pacific shows Ka-Bar as it was – a combat tool and a constant companion for Marines on painful journeys through the Pacific islands, face to face with the rabid Japanese army.
Microtech OTF – John Wick
The John Wick films have redefined contemporary action films. A retired assassin back on the streets to get revenge for his car and especially his beloved dog, the only gift from his beloved dead wife.
You won’t miss bad fight scenes and a poor quality camera anymore. John Wick delivers clear choreographed violence with a moral motive we all love.
John Wick is a film about guns, but it is also important to mention knives as they are as high quality and precise as his firearms. John always uses the best his sommelier can offer him, and his knives are no exception. In each film, John is armed with OTF knives from Microtech
OTF stands for ‘Out the Front’ and is the best term for a knife with a shooting blade. This type of knife shoots the blade by simply pressing a button on the shaft.
Microtech OTF knives have a fantastic blade. These are probably some of the best OTF knives you will come across.
Victorinox-MacGyver
Growing up, I watched MacGyver, and one of the things that stuck in my mind were the red-handled knives from Victorinox and Wenger. I always assumed it was just one knife, but while writing the article, I found out that he uses several different models. There are 16 of them in total, with Victorinox models predominating.
These knives are reasonably priced and provide a quality tool with many functions and different sizes.
It makes sense why MacGyver fell in love with them so much. He is not a warrior with knives. His main weapon is not muscles, but knowledge and the ability to improvise and adapt.
Let’s face it, MacGyver’s ability to solve problems sets him apart from other action heroes and gave him a respectable counterweight to their physical strength. Not to mention that he uses them in a more ‘positive’ way as a tool and not just as a weapon. He repairs, creates, builds and dismantles, but he always survives without unnecessarily destroying his surroundings.
Our list could go on for pages and pages. Countless cult action, adventure or war films are counterbalanced by the number of cult knives that appear in them. Legends that are displayed on the silver screen can also take the form of knives. Whether as a tool or a weapon, they have a permanent place among the great legends and stories that endure forever.
