Winning Design Chosen for CMP’s 2024 John C. Garand Logo Contest

The votes are in for the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) National Garand Match logo contest!

After an extremely tight race, the winning logo designer was Rebecca Haffey of Fulton, Miss. For her win, Haffey will be receiving a $500 gift certificate from the CMP and her logo displayed on the 2024 National John C. Garand Match shirts during this summer’s National Matches at Camp Perry.

Haffey is a graphic designer who specializes in logo design, while her husband, Tom, is a supporter of the CMP. When Haffey saw the chance to use her talents toward one of her husband’s interests, she jumped at the opportunity.

“I would like to express my many thanks to all who made this contest possible,” she said. “I think it was a great way to engage the community and personally bring more involvement from me into an area that our family is showing great interest. It is an honor, and I am grateful for the experience.”

Though she was initially unfamiliar with the John C. Garand Match, Haffey was eager to conduct her own extensive research on the history of the rifle and the CMP itself to gain inspiration for her submitted design.

“I was excited to have the chance to dive into a new area of creative focus,” she said. “I hope to find more opportunities for shooting sports design work.”

Tom, a marksmanship coach through 4-H, has passed his own knowledge onto his children who are all involved in various disciplines within the sport. Luckily, for them, Haffey plans on sharing her winnings – with Tom already swirling a few ideas in his mind on how best to use the $500 prize.

“He hasn’t decided whether to spend it sensibly on gear to help our kids, like air rifles, or splurge on something more fun, like an M1 Garand,” she said. “He would also like to get more training and coaching certifications. Either way, we are really grateful to receive it.”

The second place design was created by Jennifer Stemerick of Saltsburg, PA. Her inspiration was her late father, Tom Hemphill, who was a proud Distinguished Rifleman and a regular at CMP events for several years. The “Camp Perry” of Stemerick’s design was written in Tom’s handwriting.

As the runner-up, Stemerick’s logo will be used for the 2025 National John C. Garand Match.

Congratulations, and we can’t wait to see you all at this year’s National John C. Garand events at Camp Perry, set to fire Aug. 1-4! See the full schedule and register for the 2024 National Matches at https://thecmp.org/cmp-national-matches/.

About the National Garand Match:

The roots of the John C. Garand Match date back to 1998 when the CMP introduced the competition into its target competition schedule. The Garand Match is a unique event where participants use vintage “As-Issued” M1 Garand rifles over a course of fire with 10 shots prone slow-fire, 10 shots prone from standing rapid-fire, and 10 shots standing, all at 200 yards. During the century-old National Matches, fired at Camp Perry each year, the National Garand Match attracts hundreds of competitors and is arguably one of the most popular events of the month-long schedule. The John C. Garand Trophy is awarded to the top competitor of the National Garand Match.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program is a federally chartered 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. It is dedicated to firearm safety and marksmanship training and to the promotion of marksmanship competition for citizens of the United States.
