CAMP PERRY, Ohio – On the weekend of May 31, over 60 competitors participated in the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Long Range Warm-Up Matches in Port Clinton.
The event served as practice to the upcoming National Mid/Long Range Matches, set to fire on the same Camp Perry range in August, and consisted of two days of firing at 1,000-yards using CMP’s outdoor eTarget system. Competitors chose between Match Rifle (Iron/Any Sights), Service Rifle, Palma, AR Tactical, F-Open and F T/R categories.
Day 1 proved challenging – with winds that sustained 14-18 mph and gusts up to 25. Cooler weather saw competitors bundling up on the line, but, thankfully, conditions cleared on Day 2 for a more pleasant experience.
“We heard a lot of positive feedback from competitors on the line about the match,” said Sara Rozanski, CMP highpower rifle coordinator. “Our eTargets ran well, and we were able to finish each day in around four hours.”
We’re excited to bring the same technology to competitors at National Matches in just a few weeks to make that event even more enjoyable as well,” she added.
Leading the overall two-day aggregate was Kimberly Rowe, 55, of Wadsworth, OH, with a score of 1170-43X – clearing the win by just two x-shots. Rowe had finished second on Day 1 of the Match but came back to take the top spot on Day 2 of the Iron Sights category by six points.
Any Sights competitor Thomas Bopple, 62, of Medina, OH, found the two-day aggregate win with a score of 1162-35X. Bopple began with a score of 570-13X on Day 1 but returned to add more than 20 points to his score on Day 2 with 592-22X to launch him to the first place position.
Palma class leader, Nathan Abrams, 22, of Petersburg, MI, came out strong – finishing Day 1 with a five-point lead with a score of 575-7X. He was consistent on Day 2, firing another 575 and helping him to his two-day aggregate score of 1150-19X and an overall win by a one-point margin.
James Thomas, 49, of Bellville, OH, was also consistent in his performances, recording 586-26X on Day 1 and 585-18X on Day 2 to reach an aggregate of 1171-44X and the overall with in the F-Class.
