Weeping Water Gun Club Set to Host CMP Pistol Leg Day in September

WEEPING WATER, Neb. – Mark your calendars for Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, as the Weeping Water Gun Club hosts the Cornhusker CMP Pistol “LEG” Day!

Weeping Water Gun Club is located in eastern Nebraska, between Omaha and Lincoln. During the Cornhusker event, five Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) matches are set to be held, including Service Pistol, Service Revolver, .22 Pistol, Air Pistol and Air Rifle – all part of the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) lineup of sanctioned offerings.

The day of CMP pistol (and air rifle) EIC events was created by the club to give those competitors in search of a Distinguished Badge the chance to have a full lineup of challenging competition in pursuit of the necessary EIC “leg” points needed to earn a prestigious Badge.

“We have many competitors who travel a great distance to shoot our State or Regional matches, but then they decide to hit the road instead of staying to compete in our CMP events,” said Dr. Bill Schlichtemeier of Weeping Water Gun Club.

“A few years ago, I talked with the CMP, and it was proposed to host a sole CMP EIC ‘leg’ day – with the opportunity to win several legs on one day instead of having the matches associated with a State or Regional Championship,” he explained. “The idea was quite appealing.”

In 2023 and 2024, the Weeping Water Gun Club held CMP Leg Days, featuring CMP Service Pistol EIC, CMP EIC .38 Revolver, CMP .22 Pistol, CMP Air Pistol and CMP Air Rifle matches all on a single Saturday (and scheduled around a Nebraska Football “BYE” weekend).

“We know that if we hold it on a Nebraska Home Game day, attendance will be reduced 40 percent or more,” Schlichtemeier admitted.

The club has also tried to partner with another local club just a few miles away that holds a range long enough to host legal CMP Rifle leg matches – hoping to give competitors the opportunity to shoot four or five leg matches on a Saturday as well as the next day.

“It’s quite appealing to those trying to become Distinguished and draws a significant number of additional competitors – thus, allowing the opportunity for more legs to be awarded,” Schlichtemeier said. “That worked the last couple years.”

As far as caliber of competition on the firing line, Nebraska is the home of Pershing Rifles along with 360 Rifle and Pistol Club, Weeping Water Gun Club and the Lincoln Rifle and Pistol Club, all winners or placers of several National Team Awards.

So, when it comes to marksmanship competition, Nebraskans know a thing or two.

“I don’t think that the legs will come easy, especially if the attendance increases significantly,” Schlichtemeier said.

For more information or questions on the event, contact Dr. Schlichtemeier at [email protected] or 402-677-2456.
