Scot Storm Named 2025 Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year

Storm’s “Sunset Calls” will be the centerpiece of DU’s national art package

Wildlife artist Scot Storm is the Ducks Unlimited (DU) 2025 Artist of the Year. His “Sunset Calls” painting, featuring mallards descending into a field of decoys, will be the centerpiece of DU’s 2025 national art package.

Storm, a four-time DU Artist of the Year, skillfully brings to life the beauty and tranquility of waterfowl in their natural habitat. This canvas artwork is adorned with an Artist of the Year title plate affixed to the frame. Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and art collectors, “Sunset Calls” offers a timeless depiction of nature’s splendor and the artist’s mastery.

As a youngster, Storm discovered his talent for drawing, sketching and design. These skills eventually led him to North Dakota State University, where he earned a degree in architecture. While working in this field, Scot’s love of hunting and the outdoors drew him to explore the challenges of wildlife art.

As a self-taught artist, he entered the Minnesota Duck Stamp contest in 1987 and placed second. Encouraged by the acceptance of his initial work, he continued to enter stamp contests and won his first top award, the Indiana Pheasant Stamp competition, in 1991.

Storm’s interest in wildlife art became such a passion that in 1999, he decided to give up his career in architecture and devote himself full-time to painting.

“My paintings reflect nature through my eyes, the delicate balance between everyday life, the conservation of future wildlife and the hunting heritage I will pass on to future generations,” he said.

One artist is selected each year as the Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year. The art chosen must include waterfowl but may focus on waterfowl hunting, retrieving dogs or still-life subjects. The Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year is recognized with an article in Ducks Unlimited Magazine and at the DU National Convention.
