Petersen’s HUNTING Hires Colton Heward as New Managing Editor

DENVER (March 6, 2024) – Petersen’s HUNTING, the leading media outlet devoted exclusively to hunters, has tapped Colton Heward as its new Managing Editor. Heward, a noted big-game guide and successful outdoor journalist, will be help lead HUNTING’s efforts to educate, entertain and inform hunters through its print, digital and social channels. In addition to his duties at HUNTING, Heward will also play an integral role at Precision Hunter, Backcountry Hunter and Wheels Afield magazines. Petersen’s HUNTING is part of Outdoor Sportsman Group publications.

“Colton will make an outstanding addition to our editorial team, which is the best in the industry,” said Petersen’s HUNTING publisher Kevin E. Steele. “I look forward to his contributions to the HUNTING brand and our various media platforms in the years to come. After spending seven days with Colton last year in the Africa bush, I knew, at some point, we would be asking him to join our crew.”

Colton Heward comes from a multi-generational line of hunters and conservationists entrenched in the rich hunting heritage of the West. For more than a decade, Heward spent his falls guiding mule deer, elk, pronghorn and moose hunters before taking on his current role as Managing Editor of Petersen’s HUNTING. Outside of guiding, his passion for hunting and the outdoors has taken him to the remote corners of the world from Alaska to Africa in search of adventure and provided some of his most cherished memories. Preserving our revered hunting tradition through education and conservation is of the utmost importance to him in his role at Petersen’s HUNTING.

“From the moment I met Colton on a mule deer hunt several year ago, I knew he was going to have a successful career in the outdoors,” said David Draper, editor in chief of Petersen’s HUNTING magazine. “His experience as a hunter, coupled with his talent as a communicator, is a rare commodity. I look forward to his contributions and expect Colton to be an important part of the ongoing success of HUNTING.”

Prior to working for Petersen’s HUNTING, Heward was a freelance outdoor journalist with regular contributions to many Outdoor Sportsman Group publications, including Petersen’s HUNTING, Backcountry Hunter, Precision Hunter and Gun Dog, along with several other media outlets.

Since 1973, Petersen’s HUNTING has brought together the most passionate and discerning hunters of this generation and the next with real-world outdoor adventures from the most experienced writers and photographers in the hunting space. The magazine informs and entertains through engaging stories, hands-on product reviews and authentic insight to create experiential content on the places, products and people that define the world of hunting. Petersen’s HUNTING magazine has the largest audience of any other adventure hunting-oriented brand, with over 4-million readers Learn more at www.petersenshunting.com.
