Celebrating 30 Years of Outdoor Channel with Tom McMillan of “McMillan”

DENVER (September 19, 2024) –  The Outdoor Channel proudly celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, marking three decades of excellence in outdoor programming. To commemorate this significant milestone, Tom McMillan, renowned host of the popular TV series McMillan, shares his insights and experiences, reflecting on the evolution of outdoor television and its impact on viewers worldwide.

Tom McMillan has witnessed remarkable changes in outdoor programming over the years his TV series, McMillan, has ran. “Two things come to mind when I think of this,” says McMillan. “One is the sheer number of different shows that have been available to watch and the other major change is the variety of programming—in both show structure and content. Viewers’ tastes have expanded over the years on what they want to watch, and producers have headed that call.”

McMillan also acknowledges that the advancements in technology have played a pivotal role in transforming how outdoor shows are produced and consumed today. “Improvements to technology and the quality of the equipment we use as producers and videographers have had the most significant impact on the quality of the shows we can produce,” McMillan explains. “Additionally, the need for each individual show to remain relevant and keep a strong viewer base has driven the evolution of content. Variety in content is key.”

Reflecting on the evolution of his own show, McMillan emphasizes the importance of change and adaptation. “My idea for the overall series arc of ‘McMillan’ is to show the ever-changing and busy stories that occur in the outdoor lifestyle that I am lucky enough to live. The evolving change comes within the content of each episode from season to season. The overall theme is to show my day-to-day life of hunting, ranch and farm work, guiding hunts, and family.”

Over the years, McMillan has created countless cherished memories for both its host and viewers. “Without a doubt, one of my favorite memories is when my son Gatlin shot his first deer using a crossbow at the age of six. That episode aired several years ago, and it is still my favorite,” he shares. Furthermore, collaborations with notable guests, such as the legendary Ted Nugent, have brought unforgettable experiences to the show.

As the Outdoor Channel celebrates its 30th anniversary, McMillan reflects on the significance of this milestone. “Pride is the word that comes to mind. I am proud of the industry itself for being able to create hunting, fishing, and outdoor lifestyle shows for its viewers. Thank goodness OSG has always seen the importance and value of producing shows that promote our way of life. I have been lucky to be a small part of it.”

“There are a lot of platforms out there that could be a vehicle, but I think it is important to work with people who understand you, your purpose, and your goals. I feel Outdoor Channel does that,” he concludes.
