Cavin Marks Multiple Event Records at CMP’s 2025 Talladega D-Day Event

By Ashley Dugan, CMP Staff Writer

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Chance Cavin, 38, of Madison, MS, set not one, not two, but three new event records during the 2025 Talladega D-Day rifle matches!

Cavin tallied record scores in the Three-Gun Aggregate (869-26X), Four-Gun Aggregate (1157-38X) and Carbine (380-8X) rifle matches. Additionally, he was the top competitor in the Garand and Vintage Military rifle events.

The annual Talladega D-Day features a lineup of rifle and pistol competitions for all experience levels, including a set of benchrest matches that allow a fixed position for those needing extra support on the firing line. The 2025 event was held in June at the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama and attracted over 270 participants – a slight increase from last year’s number.

The Talladega D-Day event celebrates the past through friendly competitions on the range.
Those participating in Talladega’s rifle events were able to use the park’s convenient outdoor eTarget system.

Also finding a new Talladega D-Day record was Keith Schachle, 66, of Jasper, GA, who earned a score of 289-8X to claim the Springfield rifle match. Kyle Kirschenmann, 61, of Tellico Plains, TN, dominated both pistol events – leading the Military & Police Pistol Match by a seven-point margin and the As-Issued 1911 Match by over 20 points.

Special congratulations also goes to Clint Townsend, 42, of Senatobia, MS, who earned a “Hard Leg” by claiming his first 10 Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) points toward a Distinguished Rifleman Badge! Townsend finished 11th overall in the Roosevelt Commemorative Match.

This year’s D-Day event also included shotgun competitions, with team Sunshine (Grant Lewis, Dudley Parker) overtaking the Team Match and Mark Holland, 61, of Sanford, NC, finding the 5-Stand win.
