SAN ANTONIO, TX (1-minute read) — A 22-year-old man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of a west-side H-E-B on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. at the 2100 block of Culebra Road as the man was loading groceries into his vehicle.

According to San Antonio police, the firearm discharged, striking the man in the face. The wound was described as non-life-threatening, and no other injuries were reported. His mother, who was inside the vehicle at the time, was unharmed.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the firearm belonged to the injured man. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with questions raised about how the firearm was handled or stored at the time of the discharge.

Gun Safety and Handling: A Reminder

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of proper firearm handling and safety. Negligent discharges can often be avoided with adherence to basic safety measures such as keeping fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot, ensuring firearms are unloaded before transport, and storing them securely in cases or holsters.

Safety Tip: Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Double-check the chamber and magazine before handling, and never point a firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot.
