It’s never a good idea to overextend yourself financially over the holidays. Rather than miss out on the festivities or stifle the joy of the holiday season, get creative with our top-notch holiday decorating ideas on a budget.
Holiday decorations are mood lifting, yet they are often very expensive. Delight in these clever ways to save money on holiday decorations without breaking the bank!
- Buy second-hand goods. Shop at organizations such as Goodwill that support the community by selling gently used goods. Note they also offer employment services and training, so when you donate or buy second-hand items, you are supporting others, too. Many times, top quality donated items can be found, such as ornaments, holiday themed candlesticks, garland and more. When you donate to or buy second-hand, you are also helping the environment by keeping items out of landfills.
- Make homemade. Often, it is cheaper to make homemade goods than to buy manufactured ones. Here are two examples: Store bought garland can be pricey. To save money, make homemade garland. For an inexpensive popcorn strand, all you need is a needle, thread, and popcorn. Likewise, premade table centerpieces are not cheap. To make your own, simply fill a vase you already own with sticks collected from the outdoors. For bling factor, first spray paint the sticks in gold to add holiday appeal.
- Wrap your frames. Rather than buy new and expensive holiday-themed wall art, simply wrap preexisting pictures in assorted wrapping paper and add bows to the front. Not only does this festive holiday art show off colorful themes and patterns, but it’s an amazing way to keep the decorating budget down.
- Reinvent what you own. Get creative with what you already have. For example, by placing your red throw blanket next to your green pillows on the couch, you’ve created an instant holiday theme.Or by folding some green napkins into Christmas tree shapes, you’ve instantly turned them into something special this time of year. Watch this tutorial to learn how to fold ordinary napkins into Christmas trees.
- Buy inexpensive bundles. When things are sold in bundles or bunches, such as groupings of plastic holiday ornaments, bags of craft pinecones, or packages of real candy canes, they are likely to be cheaper to buy than individual options. Rather than use pricey single glass ornaments for décor, opt for savings and choose bundles instead.
- Use prior year’s holiday cards. If you’re a saver, you’re likely to have accumulated sentimental Christmas or Hanukkah cards given to you by family and friends throughout the years. Many are on durable card stock, so they are sturdy and ideal for crafting. Cut out the images, then glue sparkly pipe cleaners around the edges to act as frames. Use ornament hooks to hang them on the tree or display them around the house to celebrate.
Making seasons bright
On a tight budget for the holiday season? Don’t fret. In the words of Edith Wharton, “True originality consists not in a new manner but in a new vision.” Ingenuity can thrive when looking at things in a new way, from breathing life into secondhand goods to turning old treasures into new ones. Know that it is entirely possible to enjoy holiday decorating on a budget and make seasons bright for yourself, your family, and your friends.
