LAPLACE, LA — A disturbance at a home in the 2100 block of Williamsburg Drive on November 21, 2024, led to the fatal shooting of 51-year-old Anthony Kelly. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which appears to be a case of justifiable homicide.

Authorities responded to the scene at approximately 11:45 p.m. following reports of a disturbance. Investigators determined that Kelly, who had a history of mental illness, forced entry into his nephew Damien Keys’ home, armed with a large kitchen knife. Kelly proceeded to kick in the bedroom door where Keys, his girlfriend, and their infant child were present.

Keys told investigators that Kelly began swinging the knife, prompting him to retrieve a nearby handgun. Keys fired multiple shots, striking Kelly. After being shot, Kelly fled the residence and was later found by deputies lying on the ground several blocks away. He was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Ochsner LaPlace, where he was pronounced dead.

Earlier that day, Kelly had reportedly been involved in an altercation with other family members. The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is continuing its investigation but has indicated that the shooting appears to have been justified based on the circumstances.

This incident underscores the vital importance of owning a firearm for personal and family protection. Faced with an immediate and deadly threat, the ability to access a firearm likely prevented a tragic outcome. Without this means of defense, the safety of the homeowner, his girlfriend, and their infant child could have been gravely compromised. Responsible gun ownership, including understanding self-defense laws and practicing safe firearm storage, is essential to being prepared for unforeseen dangers.
