Armed Family Member Stops Home Intruder, but Resident Also Injured in Gunfire

DECATUR, IL — On the evening of November 18, 2024, a 35-year-old male intruder was fatally shot during an attempted unlawful entry into a residence in the 2000 block of E. Damon Avenue. A 66-year-old female resident was also injured during the incident.

According to the Decatur Police Department, officers responded to the residence around 7:38 p.m. Upon arrival, they found the male intruder and the female resident suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported both individuals to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where the 35-year-old male succumbed to his injuries. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

Investigators determined that the male intruder had no known connection to the property and was on Mandatory Supervised Release through the Illinois Department of Corrections. During the intrusion, a 48-year-old male relative of the resident arrived at the scene and encountered the suspect. As the intruder advanced into the home, the armed relative fired multiple shots, striking the man.

Detectives recovered four shell casings and a handgun at the scene, with evidence indicating that the weapon belonged to the family member, who holds a valid Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and an active Concealed Carry License (CCL). The investigation is ongoing, and findings will be reviewed by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Self-Defense Takeaway

This incident highlights the importance of preparedness and the critical role armed family members can play in protecting loved ones. The intruder’s intent remains unknown, but the quick actions of the armed relative likely prevented further harm.

However, this case also underscores the importance of firearm safety, specifically Rule Four: Always Be Sure of Your Target and What’s Beyond It. Reports indicate the female resident was unintentionally struck by gunfire, serving as a reminder that even in high-stress situations, identifying the target and potential collateral impact is crucial. Training, situational awareness, and adherence to this rule can mitigate the risk of unintended injury while defending oneself or others.
