DECATUR, IL (1-minute read) — A home invasion Monday evening in Decatur led to a fatal shooting that left the intruder dead and one resident injured. Decatur Police responded at 7:38 p.m. to a shooting on the 2000 block of E. Damon Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 35-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman with gunshot wounds.

Both individuals were transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital. The man succumbed to his injuries, while the woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators secured the scene, recovering a handgun and matching shell casings.

The family member engaged the man with multiple gunshots, halting the intrusion.

Further investigation revealed the deceased was on Mandatory Supervised Release from the Illinois Department of Corrections and had no known connection to the home. Video surveillance and witness accounts corroborated the series of events leading up to the shooting.
