Weekend Open Thread: Disturbance in the Force Edition

0

Hey Everyone…welcome to the Weekend Open Thread.  For the second time in as many months, there has been a theme which is inappropriate to use in a family-friendly (Hawk Tuah), or non-political format in this case…

The Springfield cat memes are all the rage, but we try not to wade too deeply into politics. So while my job would have been too easy this week were I to  grab the low hanging fruit, it would likely add to the current divisive atmosphere. Well, just one…

Sorry, I am a weak-willed person. But that was one of the two that were my favorites. Do a little google-fu, you will find plenty on your own.

The world lost a legend this week. Just a few words in his unmistakable voice is enough to bring a flood of memories.

James Earl Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, Mike Rowe, and Morgan Freeman are my Mount Rushmore of voice-overs.

Or creepiest. I’m not sure.

I would love to have heard that. I still have a CB in my trail jeep, but used to have one in my first car (a Pontiac 6000 wagon), and my daily-driving jeep after that. But they have gone the way of the dodo. It is a shame.

Not really a meme, but talk about an amazing story.

Taking a look at the Events Calendar, the most important item of note is that the Louisiana Custom Knife Show has been postponed due to Hurricane Francine.

Apparently, the venue was commandeered as a command center for the Emergency response.

There is also the NCCA show on Saturday…

NCCA One-Day Knife Show

Ignore that March date, it is this weekend, this year…

Nothing next weekend, and then 3 the weekend after…

Wolverine Knife Collector’s Club (WKCC) State Line Knife Show

Bluegrass Knife Show

Bowie’s Memorial Hammer-In

Since ESPN is currently in a pissing contest with Uverse, I can’t watch a college football game tonight. So I have Smoky and the Bandit on the TV while I work. Who better to use as out musical guest tonight than the late, great Jerry Reed.

Eastbound and Down is overplayed. Reed was a heck of a guitar player, and could sing a story-song with the best of them. Jerry Reed died in 2008.

It is Friday the 13th, but I’ve used that as a theme before. But here is another I haven’t shared before…

I am looking forward to football this weekend, though it isn’t a great one as far as rooting interest goes.

The Buckeyes have a bye week, and the Browns are well…the Browns.

Cleveland is where Quarterbacks go to die.

He sucks. On and off the field.

I’m over Travis too.

We stay mostly politically neutral here, but I don’t think I am alone in being baffled that these are the best two candidates we could come up with. Voyager 1 has the right idea.

Technically, this is political, but I am sharing it for the absolutely devastating takedown by poll analyst Nate Silver…

And dunking on Commies is always fair game…

“The record of history is absolutely crystal clear, that there is no alternative way so far discovered of improving the lot of the ordinary people that can hold a candle to the productive activities that are unleashed by the free-enterprise system.” – Milton Friedman.

“It’s not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan…

Hunting season is almost upon us…

Chonky boi.

Certainly the most original.

11 points on that one. You don’t need to embellish it. That’s a heck of a deer.

It is too soon!

Nooooo!!!!!

That movie still creeps me out. I remember watching it in the theater.

Time for a knife giveaway. This week’s drawing is for a CRKT Shenanigan, designed by Ken Onion.

Congrats to Mark R. I actually drew Hocky, but he had withdrawn, and then I drew Del, but the knife is assisted open, so probably not a good idea to send to Canada. So Mark. the Shenanigan is headed your way.

Next week, we will be giving away a CRKT CEO Flipper, the epitome of a gentleman’s knife…

Usual rules apply, up to 5 comments or replies are your entries, and if you are a new commenter, yours will be held in moderation until I can approve the first batch. Thank you for being patient.

And now, back to the show, I will even give you a topic to start..

Since no one answered the “Who is the best Bond” question the other week.

Not well indeed.

Strangely accurate. As is this…

This took me a minute…

They were swimming in metric.

I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

YOLO.

I don’t make knives, but I have effed up my work on the router table before.

Did it work?

My son found that hysterical.

They didn’t feel a thing.

I have no problem with drinking in the bath or shower, but I am uncomfortable with that much glass around my bathroom.

All the stinking time.

Scuba Vampires sound terrifying.

“Rollback”

I like my women how I like my siege artillery.

The face of evil.

The answer is yes, but what is the song?

Scientists are still trying to discover the elusive “leftover bacon” if such thing exists.

Walrus au gratin, with leftover bacon.

Switching gears briefly…

342 as of this writing, Friday 13, 2024.

Why do I take a portion of each Open Thread to speak out on behalf of Israel? Because Israel is fighting an enemy that has sworn to annihilate the Jewish people.

Rape and Murder of civilians is not “resistance”. Israel is fighting a legally just war. The deaths of civilians in Gaza are on the hands of Hamas, as they initiated these hostilities. They can end them tomorrow if Hamas capitulates and the hostages are returned. I will not be silent.

Michael Rapaport won’t be silent either. (NSFW Obviously)

Only someone as great as Jerry Reed can follow something like that…

Classic tune. Brings a tear to your eye, don’t it?

I found that silly.

Haiku is fairly snobish

I want a cold beer.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s assemblage of memes.

It isn’t much, but it is honest work.

Editor’s note…I actually published this early saturday, but neglected to click the “Feature” box and it didn’t post above the fold. My power was out for about 6 hours yesterday, and I never made it back online to fix. Apologies. – HCA

Have a good one everybody.
