Spydercollector: Spyderco FB09 Ronin

I’ve always had this fascination with small fixed blades, so when this Michael Janich/Mike Snody designed Ronin was launched in 2002, I jumped right on it. Especially as I was really into MBC at the time. I loved it and enjoyed it mostly as a collection piece. As so often happens when your collection grows, a great new piece gets pushed into the back of the cabinet when new models show up. However, I keep hearing that this original Spyderco Ronin has become quite the collectible, so I took it out again for some proper appreciation.

The Ronin still stands out from other Spyderco fixed blades, with that micarta handle and impressive edge geometry. The thin acute needle-like tip and that thin edge are not dissimilar from a Civilian. Many other Spyderco fixed blades seem to feature slightly thicker tips and edges, to make them a little more ‘idiot proof’. After all, the Ronin was not designed to be a hard-use utility knife.

Such a cool knife that it gets 4 Spydie Holes.

In honesty, I really dig this knife.  You see Janich’s DNA in the Yojimbo shaped blade.
