Self-Defense In Schiller Park, IL

In Schiller Park, IL, a 19-year-old was fatally shot during a road rage incident. The shooter acted in self-defense and will not face charges.

SCHILLER PARK, IL (1-minute read) — A road rage incident that escalated into a fatal shooting in Schiller Park has been ruled as self-defense, leading to no charges being filed against the shooter. The event unfolded around 5:50 p.m. near Irving Park Road and Scott Street after an altercation that began on I-294.

The deceased, 19-year-old Malachi Johnson, exited his vehicle and approached the other car involved in the incident. Both drivers then drew their firearms and exchanged gunfire. Johnson suffered a fatal gunshot wound to his upper body and was transported to Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A female passenger in Johnson’s car was also shot but was treated and released from Loyola Medical Center.

The armed citizen and his four passengers were unharmed. Following a thorough investigation, which included reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses, the Schiller Park Police Department and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office determined that the armed citizen acted in self-defense.

It was noted that he possessed a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and a concealed carry license.

The Role of De-escalation in Road Rage Incidents

Road rage can escalate quickly, leading to dangerous and sometimes deadly outcomes. It’s crucial to practice de-escalation techniques and remain calm in such situations. Avoid engaging with aggressive drivers and, if necessary, contact law enforcement rather than confronting the individual.

Safety Tip: Always prioritize de-escalation in road rage situations. Remain in your vehicle, avoid confrontations, and call law enforcement if you feel threatened.
