ST. LOUIS, MO — A 16-year-old male suspect was critically injured in an attempted armed robbery in the Soulard neighborhood early Saturday morning. According to local media, the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of 9th Street and Russell Avenue.

Two 24-year-old men were sitting in their vehicle when they were approached by four males wearing ski masks. Two of the suspects positioned themselves behind the vehicle, brandishing a firearm, while the juvenile suspect reached through an open window and began taking items from the victims. As another suspect attempted to open a passenger door, one of the victims shot the juvenile, striking him in the chest.

The suspects fled the scene in a white SUV. Shortly thereafter, the wounded juvenile was dropped off at a local hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. Police officers collected a ski mask from the hospital as evidence.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are seeking information on the remaining suspects.

Thankfully, one of the two men in the car was armed and able to defend themselves. Facing four attackers, two of whom stayed behind the car likely out of sight, could have been even more dangerous. If any of the attackers had been armed, they could have easily overpowered the victims. While it is unfortunate that the suspect shot was only 16 years old, these are the risks that come with choosing to engage in criminal activities such as robbery.
