WELLINGTON, FL (5-minute read) – A shocking incident in Wellington, Florida left a local couple dead following a heated dispute over a basketball hoop. According to deputies, the suspect, 63-year-old Norman Scott, confessed to the fatal basketball hoop shooting, citing a disagreement over property boundaries that escalated dramatically.
The tragic event occurred in the serene Black Diamond residential area, specifically at the 10500 block of Galleria Street, shortly before 5:30 p.m. last Saturday. Responding to the scene, deputies discovered Tara Marie Jones and Taylor Glenn Jones lying in their front yard, fatally wounded.
Eyewitnesses played a crucial role in unfolding the events leading to the tragedy. One neighbor reported hearing the gunshots and, upon stepping outside, saw the victims bleeding on the ground. While attempting to provide assistance, this witness encountered Scott, who chillingly admitted to shooting the couple.
The confrontation began over a seemingly minor issue—a basketball hoop placed along the property line. Scott claimed that an argument turned physical when the couple attacked him, prompting him to use his firearm in response.

Investigators retrieved vital evidence from Scott’s home, where multiple surveillance cameras captured the sequence of events. The footage showed a disturbing scene where Taylor Jones, appearing calm and unthreatening, approached Scott. Despite the non-confrontational exchange, the situation rapidly deteriorated. Scott, visibly agitated, pulled out a handgun and shot Taylor Jones several times as he attempted to retreat.
The harrowing video continued to capture Scott’s relentless aggression as he then targeted Tara Jones, who was also moving away in an attempt to escape. She too was shot and fell within her property.
Inside Scott’s residence, authorities found the 9mm handgun used in the shooting alongside spent cartridge cases near the victims’ bodies. A forensic investigation revealed that both victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds in a brutal and unprovoked attack.
Following the incident, Scott was arrested and now faces charges of first-degree murder with a firearm. His attorney describes him as a previously law-abiding citizen, suggesting complexities in the case yet to surface.
