Home Invasion Turns Fatal When Resident Fires on Intruders in Jackson, MS

JACKSON, MS — A pre-dawn home invasion on Ridgewood Road in Jackson ended in a fatal shooting when the resident of an apartment opened fire on two masked intruders, killing one and leading to the arrest of the other.

According to the Jackson Police Department, officers responded to the scene around 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a break-in. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of an unidentified Black male inside the apartment. Investigators determined that two individuals wearing ski masks had forcibly entered the occupied residence when the homeowner fired a single shot, striking one of the suspects. The injured suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene .

The second alleged accomplice fled on foot but was later apprehended by police. He has since been charged with murder under Mississippi’s felony murder rule, which holds accomplices criminally liable when a death occurs during the commission of a felony such as burglary .

Police confirmed that no charges are currently pending against the resident, who acted in what authorities described as a lawful act of self-defense. The investigation remains ongoing, and findings will be presented to the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office for review by a grand jury.

Jackson PD emphasized that the deceased and the arrested suspect were allegedly acting in concert to commit the burglary, which qualifies as a felony due to the dwelling being occupied at the time. Authorities would not confirm speculation that the apartment may have been targeted due to a connection with another individual, stating that detail is still under investigation .

The department expressed concern over youth involvement in crimes like this, underscoring that such actions can have life-altering consequences. “Nobody wins in this situation,” a JPD spokesperson said, citing the loss of life, the criminal charges now faced by a young man, and the trauma experienced by the resident .

This marks the fourth homicide of the year in Jackson.

This incident highlights the importance of the right to armed self-defense when facing a violent, unlawful entry into an occupied home. When someone forcibly enters your residence, it presents a clear and immediate threat. In this case, the resident took decisive action to stop that threat, and based on the information currently available, authorities have acknowledged that he acted lawfully. It serves as a reminder of why it’s essential to be prepared, trained, and confident in using a firearm to protect life when confronted with a real and imminent danger.
