South Dakota Moves to Deregulate Suppressors with Support from Silencer Central

Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Silencer Central, America’s leader in silencer sales and advocacy for suppressor ownership, proudly supports actions by the South Dakota legislature to deregulate these essential firearm accessories. Current law states that suppressors are legal only if the owner has the proper Federal Stamp. In 2026, the Federal Stamp fee was reduced to $0, bolstering the ongoing movement for full deregulation and removal of suppressors from the National Firearms Act (NFA), altogether. If successful, however, current state laws would not allow for new purchases of suppressors outside of the traditional NFA Federal Stamp process. And South Dakota is not alone.

“We fully support removing suppressors from the NFA,” said Brandon Maddox, Silencer Central Founder and CEO. “However, we found that 16 states where suppressors are legal have some existing law requiring the Federal Stamp. South Dakota is among them. We have been working with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) in each of these states to get these existing laws and classifications overturned, paving the way for unhindered ownership should we ever get silencers off the NFA. We are lucky that the bill is moving along swiftly in South Dakota and my hope is that we can use this state as an example for passing similar bills in the other affected states.”

The bill, which moved through the South Dakota senate unopposed, would remove suppressors from the state’s definition of a “controlled weapon” and eliminate the requirement for a Federal Stamp should their NFA designation or the transfer process continue to change.

Silencer Central will continue working with representatives from NSSF and state lawmakers to get this bill passed. Additionally, Silencer Central and NSSF representatives are operating in all affected states to develop and support similar legislation. The goal is the removal of all obstacles to lawful suppressor ownership and, ultimately, full deregulation.

About Silencer Central:

Silencer Central embarked on its illustrious journey in 2005 as South Dakota Silencer, an events-based business driven by the mission of reaching the underserved hunting and sport shooting market through a simplified silencer ownership process. Evolving into Dakota Silencer and finally rebranding as Silencer Central in August 2020, the company expanded its simplified process to all 42 states where silencers are lawful. Recognized on the 2024 Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies, Silencer Central has made purchasing a silencer a breeze by managing the entire buying process for consumers. With services including a free NFA Gun Trust, interest-free payment options, and direct shipping to their front door upon approval, Silencer Central continues to lead the way.
