Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors Welcomes Dr. Scott Petrie as Chief Executive Officer

Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth through outdoor experiences and mentorship, proudly announces Dr. Scott Petrie as its new Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Petrie brings nearly three decades of proven leadership in conservation, mentorship, and nonprofit growth. With a career spanning both the U.S. and Canada, he has built and led organizations that connect people to the outdoors, blending scientific and biological expertise with strategic vision and a deep passion for engaging the next generation of hunters, anglers, and conservationists.

Most recently, as CEO of Delta Waterfowl Foundation, Dr. Petrie helped lead a decade of significant expansion—growing staff, tripling the operating budget, and delivering a record-setting campaign exceeding $250 million. Previously, as Executive Director of Long Point Waterfowl, he built hands-on programs that introduced thousands of young people to the outdoors and inspired many to pursue careers in conservation. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management, a Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology, and an MBA, pairing scientific rigor with strategic leadership to strengthen mission impact.

“Scott’s leadership, operational expertise, and genuine heart for mentorship make him the perfect person to carry this mission forward,” said Brittany French, current CEO. “He brings a depth of experience that will strengthen every facet of our organization—from program growth to financial sustainability. Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors has always been built on grit and passion, and Scott’s steady, strategic leadership will help us build on that foundation in remarkable ways. I’m confident that under his guidance, this mission will not only continue to grow but thrive for generations, positively impacting hundreds of thousands of young people through the power of the outdoors and the wise-use of our natural resources.”

Under Dr. Petrie’s leadership, Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors will strengthen its national footprint, deepen partnerships, and expand safe, ethical outdoor opportunities for youth. With a strong financial foundation, an experienced team, and a growing network of partners, the organization is poised to expand its reach – with a vision of ensuring that every young person, regardless of where they live, has access to mentorship and meaningful outdoor experiences. Looking forward, Dr. Petrie also intends to explore opportunities to expand the organization’s reach into Canada, broadening its impact across the continent.

“Pass it On continues to grow because young people need mentors and time in the outdoors. People continuously grouse about kids who “sit on video games” or “stare at their phones.” Most of those kids don’t have someone to take them hunting or fishing. I’m thrilled Pass it On has grown to the point where we can bring someone like Scott in to lead the charge of getting more kids, mentors, and landowners involved throughout the country in this great mission,” said Board Chair Eric Dinger.

“I’m incredibly honored to join the Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors team,” said Dr. Petrie, incoming CEO. “Throughout my career, I’ve seen how a single outdoor experience can shape a young person’s life forever. My goal is for us to provide as many of those opportunities as possible—to open doors, create access, and ensure that every child who wants to hunt, fish, or simply explore nature has the chance to do so. Together, we’ll continue building a movement that strengthens conservation, uplifts communities, and connects future generations across North America to the outdoors.”

The addition of Dr. Petrie marks an exciting new chapter for the organization—a season of confidence, growth, and renewed commitment to connecting more youth than ever to the life-changing experiences found in the outdoors.
