Poultry Culled Over “Suspected” Bird Flu Case

Poultry Culled Over “Suspected” Bird Flu Case

Mass amounts of poultry are once again being culled over suspected bird flu cases. These cases were not confirmed, and the culling measures are being slated as “precautionary.”

The birds will be culled at a commercial poultry premises in County Tyrone following a suspected case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. According to a report by the BBC, disease control measures have been initiated by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) following a suspect case of the notifiable highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at the site near Pomeroy.

Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir said the suspected case was reported on November 1st and initial results suggested the presence of HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza), so disease control measures were being introduced as a “precautionary measure.”

Experts Claim Risk Of Human Bird Flu Pandemic Is Rising

The Public Health Agency (PHA) has confirmed Avian Influenza is primarily a disease of birds, and the risk to the general public’s health is very low.

So far, culling has been ineffective at slowing and stopping the spread and mutations of the bird flu.

Dr. Meryl Nass: Culling Poultry in Response to Bird Flu is a Failed Strategy and Should Cease

Chief Veterinary Officer Brian Dooher made the decision to cull based on suspicion, taking into account several factors, including clinical signs and preliminary results provided by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI). He added that the disease control measures were “crucial to limit any potential spread of disease” and stressed the “utmost importance of ensuring continuous excellent levels of biosecurity and reporting any suspect cases of avian flu to Daera immediately”.

A recently published study also claims that H5N1 avian influenza is likely to be spread among humans, but is mostly asymptomatic.

The researchers, who published the study on JAMA Network Open, said that the team identified 10 reports of 18 asymptomatic human H5N1 infections, including 2 with molecular and serologic confirmation (MSC) and 16 with molecular confirmation alone (MC).

“Since 1997, more than 1,000 infections with highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus among humans have been reported globally,” the researchers wrote. “Given ongoing A(H5N1) outbreaks in animals, understanding the frequency of A(H5N1) virus infections among asymptomatic persons can inform public health risk assessments and infection prevention guidance.”

How far is this going to go? Will it become the next big pandemic? Plandemic? What do you think is the telltale sign that this has crossed into dangerous territory? Let us know by making a comment.
